The Republic of Ireland international has signed a four-year deal at the KC Stadium having spent time on loan with Phil Brown's side last season.
McShane, who joined the Black Cats in 2007, has yet to feature for Steve Bruce's Sunderland so far this season.
The former Manchester United youngster will now look to prove his fitness to his new manager after undergoing a knee operation in July.
He was initially expected to be sidelined for three months, but is reported to be ahead of schedule in his recovery and could soon be pushing for a first team run-out.
During his loan spell at the KC Stadium last term, McShane made 17 appearances for the Tigers, scoring one goal.
