Rooney had a scan on Wednesday afternoon, immediately after returning to the UK after picking up the injury in the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.
There is no break, which means Rooney's presence at this summer's World Cup will not be threatened.
Rooney's injury was confirmed as a minor ligament strain by the club yesterday and Ferguson said in Friday morning's press briefing that the England international would be back within three weeks.
That rules Rooney out of the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich but could see him return for the derby against Manchester City on 17th April.
Ferguson said: "(There is) no bone damage or serious ligament damage. The nation can stop praying."
On Thursday, a United club statement read: "We are pleased to report that Wayne has not suffered a fracture.
"The scan revealed only minor ligament damage."
