Diniyar Bilyaletdinov put Everton in front after 24 minutes. Jonathan Spector attempted to head away a Leighton Baines cross but found only Tim Cahill, who nodded back for Bilyaletdinov to glance in from close range.
Mido had a penalty saved by Tim Howard after 37 minute when Sylvain Distin clipped the back of Carlton Cole's legs.
The Hammers levelled on the hour as a Mark Noble corner fell between a group of players in the Everton area. Manuel da Costa was the quickest player to react in the ensuing scramble and forced the ball home for an equaliser.
The home side looked to have won it five minutes from time when Ayegbeni Yakubu nodded in to restore the advantage but two minutes later Ilan powered home a diving header to secure a deserved and very valuable point, halting a run of six successive defeats.
