Petr Cech was Chelsea's hero as they won the Community Shield on penalties against United at Wembley.
Goalkeeper Cech saved superbly to deny Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra in the shoot-out, earning Chelsea a 4-1 spot-kick triumph after Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou netted. Michael Carrick was the only United player to convert.
A last-minute equaliser by Wayne Rooney had taken the contest to penalties after Chelsea looked to have won in controversial circumstances.
The Blues trailed to a Nani strike at half-time but equalised through Ricardo Carvalho six minutes after the break.
However Frank Lampard's 70th-minute strike which put Chelsea in front proved controversial. Chelsea's Ballack appeared to elbow Evra, but with the United player down, referee Chris Foy allowed play to continue and England midfielder Lampard's shot beat Ben Foster.
