Torres ended September in scintillating fashion with a sensational hat-trick as the Merseysiders comfortably saw off the challenge of Hull City (6-1) and moved into third place in the Barclays Premier League table.

Arrest made Stevie G burglary
Police have charged a 22-year-old man in connection with the burglary and robbery of Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard nearly two years ago.
On the evening of December 11, 2007, four masked raiders invaded the Formby home of Reds star Gerrard and even confronted his wife, Alex Curran.
Gerrard was away with Liverpool on Champions League duty in Marseille at the time while the burglars fled the scene with items of jewelery.
It would be appear that one of the culprits involved is being brought to justice, however, as an arrest has been confirmed by Merseyside Police.
"Police have arrested and charged a 22-year-old man from Stockbridge Village, Liverpool, with burglary and robbery following an incident at a house in Formby on December 11, 2007," a police spokesman said.
"Martin Wilson will appear at North Sefton Magistrates' Court on October 30."
It ends any lingering hope Owen had of being involved in England's final two qualifiers against Ukraine and Belarus next month and has ruled him out of United's Barclays Premier League matches against Sunderland and Bolton Wanderers.
And, given Fabio Capello was at Old Trafford to witness Owen limping off after just 20 minutes of United's 2-1 Champions League win over Wolfsburg, there must now be a huge question mark over the 29-year-old forward's ability to force his way into the Italian's plans before England head to South Africa for the World Cup next summer.
"Michael felt a slight groin injury after training on Sunday," revealed Ferguson.
"He thought he was fine to play but on a wet surface, when he tried to turn quickly, it came back again.
"It is not a serious one and I am not worried because players do get them, but he will be out for two to three weeks.
"The only good part is that his fitness levels are very good."
All 20 Premier League members have agreed to adhere to a set of regulations designed to protect the viability and sustainability of the clubs.
These rules will be introduced to give the Premier League, the FA and UEFA the assurance that the clubs can complete competition commitments throughout a season.
All components of income and expenditure will be included in these assessments. These rules will be applied from this season onwards.
Clubs must submit independently audited accounts to the Premier League by 1st March each year with requirements to note any material qualifications or issues raised by auditors.
There will also be a requirement for clubs to submit future financial information to the Premier League by 31st March each year. This will act as an improved early warning system should any club take undue financial risks which may have consequences for future financial stability.
Clubs will also have to demonstrate to the Premier League Board that they do not have outstanding debts to other clubs.
And there will be an annual requirement to demonstrate to the Premier League Board that a club is not in debt with regard to income tax or National Insurance and payroll taxes.
Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "Clubs will all have to annually submit accounts and future financial information.
"At all times the board of the Premier League will be applying a test which basically says this: can the club fulfil its fixtures, pay off its creditors when they are due and also to meet obligations to the Premier League's contracts and partners?
"If the board believe a club is at risk of not meeting those obligations, it has to then step in and agree a budget for the running of that club. Any transfers could be embargoed.
"It's absolutely crucial that these clubs are run as ongoing viable concerns. These financial rules apply immediately.
"At our club meeting last week, the clubs absolutely endorsed our position of not linking expenditure to income."
These rules are to ensure that Premier League football clubs can meet their obligations throughout a season including being able to fulfil all fixtures; fulfil contractual obligations to the Premier League and demonstrate that they can meet all payments due during a season.
Any qualification raised in accounts or risk seen by the Premier League Board could result in action to help prevent a club from exposing itself to financial difficulties that may be deemed unsustainable or put at risk the future financial sustainability of a club.
Clubs that fall into such financial difficulty could be subject to financial controls relating to transfer activity and/or player salaries.
The 20 clubs have agreed the introduction of a home-grown player rule, which will take effect at the start of the 2010/11 campaign.
From next season, clubs must include eight home-grown players out of a squad of 25.
A home-grown player will be defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the Season during which he turns 21).
Clubs will be able to supplement their squads with unlimited additional players under the age of 21 on 1st January in the year in which the season commences.
Changes to the squad list of 25 may be made during the period of a transfer window.
Chief executive Richard Scudamore confirmed: "As of next season clubs will be required to have a squad named of up to 25 players, of which no more than 17 can be over the age of 21 and not home grown.
"The definition of home grown is trained for three years under the age of 21 by somebody in the English and Welsh professional system.
"Clubs will have to declare their 25 at the end of August when the window shuts and then again at the end of January."
Premier League Academies have 320 scholars aged between 16 and 18 and a further 2,486 students aged under 16.
Over 85 per cent of Academy scholars (16 - 18 years of age) are British, a proportion that rises to around 95 per cent for students (under 16 age groups).
Academic standards, as judged by Ofsted, are good and the welfare of the young people is of paramount importance to the Premier League and its clubs.
Scudamore believes the England team will ultimately reap the reward of the new ruling which he feels in unlikely to encourage clubs to hoard young overseas players.
"It's not in the club's interests to stockpile players. It will make buying home-grown talent more attractive," he said.
"We're not going down the route of a nationality test but what this will mean is that you just can't buy a team from abroad.
"We think it will give clubs an extra incentive to invest in youth. We think that one of the benefits will be that it will help the England team."
Sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe has welcomed the Premier League's new rules on home-grown players as being good for the long-term health of football.
Sutcliffe said: "I welcome the Premier League's introduction of a home-grown player quota for squads and its implementation of strengthened financial reporting rules.
"These moves will encourage clubs to develop and bring through young talent and help ensure clubs are financially stable."
The Tottenham Hotspur pair have been rewarded for a flying start to the Barclays Premier League campaign which has brought four wins from four matches.
Spurs began the season in fine style, defeating Liverpool at White Hart Lane thanks to a Benoit Assou-Ekotto thunderbolt and Sebastien Bassong's second-half winner.
This was followed by a Jermain Defoe masterclass away at Hull City, where the England forward's hat-trick was the highlight of a comprehensive 5-1 triumph.
Defoe's scoring form continued as he grabbed the equaliser in the next match, away at West Ham United, with Redknapp's side sealing a come-from-behind victory through Aaron Lennon's late finish.
The north London club preserved their 100 per cent record in August in dramatic fashion, as a last-gasp Aaron Lennon winner saw off newly promoted Birmingham City 2-1. Peter Crouch's opener was cancelled out by a close-range Lee Bowyer effort before the diminutive winger's late clincher.
This is the first time that Defoe has won the award. He is the first Spurs recipient of the prize since forward pair Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov jointly scooped the honour in April 2007.

The decision was made by the Barclays Awards Panel, which includes representatives from football's governing bodies, the media and fans.
The 24-year-old, a £5m signing from Marseille, will take over from Dean Whitehead as skipper following his departure for Stoke City, which was closely followed by that of stand-in Danny Collins, also to the Britannia Stadium.
Manager Steve Bruce said: "Some people might raise their eyebrows but he speaks the language perfectly well, he leads by example, he's a good age, he's got experience, he captains his country and he's captained his old club in Marseille.
"I think anybody who's watched him will understand why I have made him captain of the club."
Cana has made a big impact since his summer move to the Stadium of Light, forging a combative central midfield partnership with fellow newcomer Lee Cattermole.
The innovative coaching project, run in partnership with the British Council, sees Premier League coaches help local coaches in developing their coaching skills but also teaches them to use football as a tool for skills and community development.
The one week course in the Yangpyung district of Korea will run until 27th August and is the first course that has included participants who have disabilities. These include those who are deaf, blind, have cerebral palsy and learning difficulties.
The project is supported by local partners MBC Football and the Korean Football Association for the Disabled (KFAD). In total 44 community coaches from all over Korea are participating, with half of them currently coaching or being involved in disabled football teams.
The project is being led by four Premier League coaches who are especially experienced in community and disability football coaching. Everton's Johnnie Gartside is the head coach and he is joined by his Goodison colleagues Scott Black and Andrew Brady, as well Tottenham Hotspur's James Hemmings.
Premier Skills is the centrepiece of the Premier League's International Good Causes Programme.
Following pilots in Egypt and India, it has rapidly rolled out to a total of 18 projects across 10 countries, from Africa to China, India and South East Asia. More projects will be added between now and the end of the 2009/10 season with the overall aim to train 1,000 coaches, who will go on to impact on the lives of a further 100,000 people.
The Korea project is the tenth to take place in Asia following courses in China (Beijing, Dalian, Shanghai), Hong Kong, India (Delhi, Kolkata, Goa and Kerela) and Vietnam.
Premier League Chief Executive, Richard Scudamore said: "The Premier League is becoming increasingly popular in Asia and we are fortunate to have several Korean football stars play in England. It is important we use our profile and reach to encourage and engage communities - the roll-out of Premier Skills projects will do just that.
"Our partnership with the British Council will help develop the skills of local youth leaders for the long term benefit of their local communities. It is particularly pleasing that Korea is breaking new ground by being the first Premier Skills course to deliver disability coaching."
Martin Davidson, Chief Executive of the British Council, said: "I know first-hand that there is huge demand for English in Korea and that interest in the Premier League is bigger than ever. Next month we will launch the Premier Skills website which will give millions of learners and teachers around the world an opportunity to improve their English and learn more about their favourite Premier League teams and players.

A 25 years old has been arrested for attempted murder after stabbing incident that has left the footballer in a 'serious' condition in hospital.
One of the two men who reportedly attacked and stabbed West Ham United defender Calum Davenport and his mother early this morning, leaving the footballer in a "serious" condition in hospital, has been arrested by police "on suspicion of attempted murder".
Davenport and his mother were attacked at 5am this morning outside their homes in Bedford, and both were rushed to hospital, with the ex-Coventry stopper being forced to undergo emergency surgery to his leg.
A 19-year-old man was arrested shortly after the incident and is still in police custody, but Bedfordshire Police have now confirmed that a 25-year-old man has also been arrested for attempted murder of Davenport.
A police spokeswoman told Goal.com : "An assault took place on Springfield Avenue at 5am this morning. A 26-year-old man was taken to hospital having received a stab injury. He is still in hospital and is not thought to be in a life threatening situation at this time.
"At the same time a 49-year-old woman was also injured and taken to hospital from Springfield Avenue in Kempston. She is also not thought to be in a life threatening condition. "The 19-year-old man who was arrested this morning shortly after the incident is still with police at Greyfriars Police Station
"But in the last few minutes a further man, a 25-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and he has been arrested in Derby.
He is due to be escorted back to Bedfordshire for questioning this evening." Neighbours and witnesses say that Davenport was stabbed "several times" and that there was "blood everywhere" at the scene of the crime.
One neighbor, Anne Desics, 61, who lives down Springfield Avenue said, "I just thought it was people passing by but then the ambulances came.
"I didn't see the incident, I just heard all this shouting. There was quite a lot of blood."
West Ham have issued a statement, wishing Davenport and his mother a quick recovery.
"The thoughts of everyone at West Ham are with Calum and his family and, due to the on-going investigation, no further information will be released," the statement reads.
When Robbie Blake slammed home his ferocious right-footed volley after 18 minutes of Burnley's 1-0 triump over the Red Devils he joined such names as Kevin Nolan, Ashley Ward and Tommy Mooney who all helped their unfancied sides deliver monumental victories that shook Premier League football to its core.
But shocks do not only come in the form of the simple 1-0, as the likes of Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers and United themselves have discovered to their cost over the years.
This was not one of the Gunners' better performances of last season, but they looked to be papering over the cracks when Cesc Fabregas' shot found the net after hitting Paul McShane. However, a wonder-strike from Geovanni and a Daniel Cousin header in the space of four second-half minutes turned the match on its head. "Of course coming to the Emirates and taking three points will surprise a lot of people, but it doesn't surprise anyone in our changing-room," said manager Phil Brown after the match.
Wolves may have finished bottom in their last Premier League campaign but they turned heads with this mid-season victory over United. Kenny Miller ran clear to beat Tim Howard and score in the 66th minute at Molineux. David Bellion had a late goal ruled out for offside as Wolves held on in this top v bottom match.
Bolton finished only two points above the relegation zone and this unexpected three points early in the season was pivotal to the Trotters' campaign. David Beckham lost possession on the edge of his own area and Kevin Nolan's resulting shot deflected past Fabien Barthez and into the net. "The defending against an outstanding world class team like United was fantastic," said Trotters manager Sam Allardyce whose side kept out Ruud van Nistelrroy and co in the evening encounter.
An Arsenal side featuring the likes of Tony Adams, Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry were brushed aside at Highbury. The Gunners created a number of chances but this was a freak Premier League encounter featuring own-goals from the Gunners' Brazilian duo Edu and Sylvinho. Hamilton Ricard's 58th minute strike put the icing on the cake for Terry Venables' side who finished the season in 14th place.
A Dwight Yorke hat-trick in 20 first-half minutes propelled United to victory against their old rivals at Old Trafford. Thierry Henry had levelled Yorke's opener after a slick move but United put their foot down and went in at the break 5-1 up as Roy Keane and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer built on their team-mate's treble. Teddy Sheringham rubbed salt into Arsenal wounds late on. Wenger's troops would finish ten points behind champions United in second place.
This shock result had extra significance as it took place on the final day of the season and saved Paul Jewell's team from relegation. David Wetherall was a colossus all match and rose to head in a free-kick from Gunnar Halle on 12 minutes. Bradford were battling relegation all season, while this defeat denied Liverpool a Champions League place. "That's something I will remember for the rest of my life," said Wetherall, expressing the magnitude of what he and Bradford had achieved.
Graham Taylor earned his first points at Anfield in 22 years as a manager with this magnificent result. Liverpool had their chances but Tommy Mooney found himself free in the Reds penalty area on 16 minutes and gratefully side-footed past Sander Westerveld. Watford had also not won at Anfield in seven attempts since their trip in 1967 - 22 years earlier.
Just like watching Brazil, Barnsley's fans used to sing. This was a result even the great Selecao would have been proud of as Barnsley pulled off their first ever win at Anfield. It came courtesy of Ashley Ward's winner nine minutes before the break. "We have had so many hammerings this was a great result," reflected Danny Wilson. "I can't praise them enough. They worked so hard. Frankly I believe something like this has been coming. We had some luck, but we deserved it. We made our own luck and it was good to see things go our way for a change." Unfortunately those 'hammerings' resulted in Barnsley being relegated after only one season in the top flight. Wilson's counterpart Roy Evans was exasperated. "We did no defending," he bemoaned.
A week earlier, United had lost 5-0 at Newcastle United whose manager Kevin Keegan said it would be a long time before the Red Devils let in that many goals again. Next match, they conceded six as they were torn apart by a rampant Saints side. Eyal Berkovic put Southampton in front and Roy Keane was sent off before Matthew Le Tissier lobbed Peter Schmeichel without even looking - gambling that the keeper would be in the same position as he had been the previous week when Philippe Albert caught him off his line. David Beckham pulled one back but Egil Ostenstad made it 3-1 at half-time. David May made it 3-2 and the final eight minutes produced four goals as Berkovic got his second and Ostenstad completed a hat-trick with Paul Scholes replying on an unforgettable afternoon at The Dell. Contrary to popular belief, this was not the infamous "grey shirts" match when United changed kit at half-time claiming the players could not see each other. That was a 3-1 defeat at The Dell six months previously in another major Premier League upset.
With Blackburn crowned champions just seven months earlier, this result sent shockwaves reverberating around the Premier League. David Busst, Dion Dublin, David Rennie, Peter Ndlovu and John Salako did the damage at Highfield Road for a Coventry City side who only avoided relegation on goal difference. Blackburn would finish the season seventh after some poor form in the first half of the campaign and this would certainly have been one of their more unsavoury memories.
Ferdinand suffered a slight tear in his thigh during training last week ahead of the Barclays Premier League opener against Birmingham City.
Initially Ferguson felt that Ferdinand would only be sidelined for a couple of weeks. However, that estimate has now been revised.
"Rio is going to be out for three to four weeks," said Ferguson.
It means Ferdinand will miss Saturday's trip to Wigan Athletic, plus next week's eagerly anticipated encounter with Arsenal.
In addition, Ferdinand now seems certain to miss the next two England matches, starting with a friendly against Slovenia on September 5, then a World Cup qualifier against Croatia four days later, when victory would book the Three Lions' place in South Africa next summer.
It also raises concerns over Ferdinand's general fitness given the £29.1m defender suffered a back injury and a calf problem last season that kept him sidelined for extended periods.
There is some good news on the injury front for United though as Ferdinand's central defensive partner Nemanja Vidic is set to make his first start of the season at the DW stadium on Saturday as United look to bounce back from Wednesday's shock defeat at Burnley.
"Nemanja has trained with us for 10 days and he is ready for the game," said Ferguson.
"Hopefully he will be OK by tomorrow."
Manager Roy Hodgson was furious after Amkar Perm defender Dmitry Belorukov executed a cynical body-check that left Johnson sprawled on the pitch in the second half of Thursday's 3-1 Europa League play-off victory.
"It was a good win against a difficult team but the game has been marred by the unbelievably blatant challenge on Andy Johnson," said Hodgson.
"It has dislocated his collarbone and put him out for a long time.
"In these times when referees are supposed to be clamping down on challenges, you get a challenge like that which goes punished with a yellow card and we lose a player for eight weeks.
"I don't think there's any doubt the defender should have been sent off.
"If you commit blatant fouls that not only stop someone from going one on one with the keeper, but also put them in hospital, there's a good chance you'll get a red card."
Fulham host Chelsea in Sunday's west London derby before embarking on the second leg against Amkar next Thursday and Hodgson said losing Johnson is a bitter blow.
The former Everton striker scored the first after just three minutes and linked superbly with Bobby Zamora, who set him up before firing his own way onto the scoresheet.
"The best part of our game by a long stretch was the ability of our front two to cause them so many problems," said Hodgson.
"They both scored and Bobby set up Andy's goal but now that partnership is broken up for the foreseeable future.
"We're looking to sign another front player so we'll consider bringing someone in, but that's not because Andy is injured but because we needed another front player anyway."
New signing Damien Duff, who arrived from Newcastle United on Tuesday, made his debut with 15 minutes to go and had an immediate impact as he helped set-up Zamora's goal.
"Damien is a quality player. He needs a bit of time to come to terms with everything we do as a team but his start couldn't have been better," said Hodgson.
"I'm sure the fans are happy with the signing and will be even happier now they have seen him."
The defender was a late withdrawal from the squad that lost at home to Sunderland on Saturday with a hamstring injury, and manager Gary Megson has confirmed that Gardner could miss the first four matches of the season.
That is an added blow for Megson, who is already looking for striking re-enforcements.
Megson has little serious back-up for Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander, and used 18-year-old Darren Ward and South Korean Chung Yong Lee on Saturday, the latter having only arrived in the country two days earlier.
Megson said: "We have a stronger squad than last season in terms of numbers and quality but there are a lot stronger squads out there.
"We will have a look around and see what (strikers) there are around and see if we can do better."
After making two great saves in yesterday's penalty shootout, Petr Cech admitted he had an idea of where the opposition were going to strike.
In recent years Cech has experienced several shootouts against Manchester United and believes he can predict which direction their takers may shoot, although he insists you can never know for sure.
'They've had a penalty shoot-out against us a few times before,' admitted Cech, 'So I knew where some players would go.
'But these players can always change as well, so I was waiting for the last minute, the last second. I tried to stay focused and go on the final move. So I am happy it worked.'
With one minute left to play, the Community Shield was as good as ours, until Wayne Rooney latched onto a Ryan Giggs through-ball and drilled into the bottom corner.
'We made a mistake in the last minute, which is unfortunate, and it is always difficult when you concede a goal in the last minute.
'But then we had a great reaction to take the penalties so calmly and all credit to our takers because they did really well.
'In football everything can change quickly, so we knew what was done was done, we knew there was a penalty shootout, so we needed to concentrate on that.
'In the end we showed great character going into the penalties and getting the result we did.'
Cech wasn't only impressed by the tranquil approach we took to the shootout, but also by the fact we had already rallied from a one-goal deficit at Wembley, just like we did against Arsenal and Everton in the FA Cup last season.
'The fact that in the first half we didn't play so well and we went 1-0 down and then had a great reaction for the second half was fantastic.
'We twisted things round and won it on penalties, so it is good to start the season like that with a win against one of the main contenders for the title.
'If you win the first trophy of the season then it is always a good start to the season. It is a positive start for everyone and exactly what we wanted.'
Teammate Michael Ballack agreed with our shot-stopping goalie. 'We have started well and we have had a good pre-season where we haven't lost one game.
'But now it starts, although we know we are prepared and that is important. We have discipline in the team, we have a good system, technically, and we are focussed. So far, so good.'
