Torres Out of The Season

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

The Spain striker underwent surgery on his troublesome knee injury on Sunday night.

The procedure rules the 26-year-old out of action for around six weeks, meaning he will miss not only the Barclays Premier League run-in but also the remainder of the club's Europa League campaign, which continues this week with a semi-final against Torres' former club Atletico Madrid.

The news will also cast a shadow over Spain's preparations for the World Cup, with Torres a key element of the European champions' set-up for the tournament which gets under way in just over seven weeks.

Ferguson: Rooney could face City

Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester United's Wayne Rooney could return to action against Manchester City.

The star striker has been struggling with an ankle problem he aggravated in the second leg of the Champions League tie to Bayern Munich but has trained this week.

If the 24-year-old suffers no reaction he will be in the squad for the hotly contested derby in the Barclays Premier League, Ferguson confirmed.
"He has done some work over the last couple of days and we will see how he is for Saturday's game," said Ferguson, who also revealed Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand have an outside chance of being involved at Eastlands.

Gallas blow for Gunners

Arsenal defender William Gallas may not figure again this season because of injury.

The French defender suffered a recurrence of his calf problem, manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed.

It is another blow for the Gunners, who lost captain Cesc Fabregas to a broken leg during the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Barcelona on Wednesday night.

Gallas, who is out of contract at the end of the current campaign, had been rushed back from missing eight matches with a calf problem.

However, after being unable to finish the Barcelona match, Wenger confirmed the French centre-back was unlikely to recover in time to play again this season.

Rooney out for two to three weeks

Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson says Wayne Rooney will miss two to three weeks with ankle ligament damage.

Rooney had a scan on Wednesday afternoon, immediately after returning to the UK after picking up the injury in the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

There is no break, which means Rooney's presence at this summer's World Cup will not be threatened.

Rooney's injury was confirmed as a minor ligament strain by the club yesterday and Ferguson said in Friday morning's press briefing that the England international would be back within three weeks.

United sweating on Rooney fitness

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will need a scan on an ankle injury which threatens to disrupt his season.

The in-form England ace was hurt when he went over awkwardly in the final minutes of his side's 2-1 Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich.

Rooney left the Allianz Arena on crutches on Wednesday night, wearing a protective boot around his right ankle, and is now a major doubt for the champions' top-of-the-table meeting with Chelsea on Saturday.

He could also struggle to make next Wednesday's return leg against the Germans while England coach Fabio Capello faces a nervous wait to see if the knock will affect his World Cup plans.
